Medieval market in my village

Last week end our village entered the holiday mood hosting a medieval market. Beautiful stalls of food and crafts filled the little plaza. We had mulled wine and gaufres, bought some herbal tea, played with wooden toys. The stall below selling dates and dried fruit was my favorite. The woman who installed it comes from Elche, a little town near Alicante with the biggest palm tree area in Spain. I was completely fascinated by the soft colours of the fresh dates and palm leaves. So much so, I think it will be my decoration theme for the Christmas holiday.

of course, there is no Spanish Christmas without turron of all sorts and all colours
Have you ever seen braided cheese like this ? At first I thought it was some kind of tiny bread but the woman selling it explained it's a type of cheese made in Slovakia. Funny isn't it ?
But the cutest were definitely these two !

Loooooooong live village markets. A little reminder of how the world should be.... as opposed to those lifeless monstrosities aka "shopping malls".

The table laden with dates looking divine. I love how the palm trees form part of the display :-) Also hearing about the cheeses makes my mouth water. I've been craving some good cheese this weekend. If I get to the deli today or later this week, I may find some.

May I ask, what is turron? It looks beautiful!
I was born in Denia, Spain and often visit family who live not far from Alicante (Alcalali to be specific!).
These stalls are amazing! Spanish culture is awesome :]

Fab pics by the way!

I am so very happy that you stopped by FK to say hello for now I have found you and your wonderful site. I will have to thank Maria Cecelia for this introduction. I very much enjoyed my first visit to {Your} Castle in Spain ~ the market looks wonderful and the donkey is sweet and adorable and I just adore that little table at the bottom of your stairs. I will soon return when I have more time to get caught up exploring your wonderful piece of the world. Please come visit me in mine anytime. ~Jermaine~

I love how the date palms appeared to be used as posts for the tent. I think it's a great idea to use them for a tropical Christmas decor.

I wish to fill my shopping basket with all you displayed here!

Turron! Wow! Thank you for reminding me of something I'd completely forgotten about. I first heard of it (and gobbled it up) during two brief trips to Lima, Peru as a courier in the early 1980's. I love the variety and beauty of Turron in your photo. Hmmm, must try to make some I think. . .

Gracias por tu visita a mi blog y por tan lindo comentario.
Muchos cariños y felicidad para ti.

Tomorrow we are celebrating Thanksgiving here. I would like to have some of that turron! I didn't know they make them in different colours!
Lovely display of all things palm. Intriguing and delightful for Christmas decorations.

I thought the cheese was pasta. Did you taste it? Was it good? Such a lovely idea to take modern society back to when things were rustic and simpler.
