Wooden spatulas and spicy chorizo with lentils

Hi Lala, your wooden spatulas are ready. I received this message a couple of
days ago from Ana and her twin sister Antonia. They live with their dad
amidst nature outside a neighbouring village. With Christmas approaching,
I'm currently setting up a Pop up shop which will be opened only in December.
The shop will be mainly about food and kitchen accessories, with my aprons
but I also want to add handmade products from our valley. It so happens that Bomi,
Ana and Antonia's father is a carpenter and is now teaching his daughters to make
kitchen accessories with olive wood. Bomi makes all sorts of wooden spatulas
which he sells to a few shops in Holland. I saw him at a party a few weeks ago and
told him I wanted to order some for my Pop up shop. I'll tell the girls to have a go at it,
he said smiling.

You cannot be mistaken by the cute little pair of wooden clogs hanged on the door
of the workshop....yes this is a Dutch family.

We chatted about bowls making and benches and chopping boards. Ana
showed me the wooden spatulas she made with her sister. I was very pleased
with the result and also very touched by their seriousness. They're only 16
and make it a point to do their job the best they can. After handing me the
spatulas, they told me: we can also change the shape, make it rounder, you can also
send us a drawing and we can try....they're definitely the sweetest business girls.
And they've also been my lovely models for the aprons, some time ago.

My wooden spatulas handmade by Ana and Antonia, in olive wood,
proudly waiting to be displayed in my Pop Up shop. The small ones are great
for sauces and can also serve as butter knives. I can already see that I will need
to order them more of the big ones, may be with a rounded end and a hole.

Back home, another mission was waiting for me, preparing lunch for
Monchéri and I. Those chorizos have been hanging there in the kitchen
for days...enough is enough I thought....although the sight of sausages drying
in a kitchen has its undeniable charm.

One of my favorite French dishes is le petit salé aux lentilles, a traditional
and very economical dish made with lentils, carrots, onion and pork loin.
As a true Andalusian guy, Monchéri loves chorizo and in the first year of
our life together, I made an Andalusian version of the French petit salé which
I believe contributed to win his heart.
The veggies are the same, although I add a few turnips and the pork loin is
replaced by spicy chorizos. In cold weather, like now, this hearty and comfy food
is just the best.

Just in case you wonder, the bottle of wine in front of me is fake...too bad..
I spotted it at a brocante on the coast and left it there to be seen.

I served the dish in those cute cassolettes. Just when Monchéri said
he could finish the whole pan, I was thinking of something really meaningful
to send to my cousin in Paris. He's a musician and is currently commissioned to
create a special work but told me he was a bit worried and struggling with
inspiration. Occasionally I send him some orange cake and I thought now was
the time to send him a cake love package but then....why not send him my
special French/Andalusian lentils...Monchéri was good sport and agreed a jar
filled with authentic food made with love could certainly boost
energy and inspiration....

Little lentils jar sent to Paris...still not received as I'm writing this post..
hope it will still be good...

Recipe

Spicy chorizo with lentils

For 4 persons
4 medium spicy chorizos
3 medium carrots
2 turnips
1/2 onion
green lentils (the equivalent of 2 water glasses)
bay leaf
thyme
1/2 cube of poultry stock
salt
pepper
olive oil

In a big pan, pour a bit of olive oil. Cut the onion in slices. Heat up the olive oil and fry the onion. Cut the chorizos in small bits. Add them in the pan and brown them for 3 to 4 mn.
Meanwhile, peel the turnips and the carrots and cut them in dice. Put them in the pan then add the lentils. Add the bay leaf, thyme and the half cube of poultry stock. Season with salt and pepper. Don't salt too much as the chorizos are already salted.
Cover with water and cook on medium heat for 50 mn. Watch for time to time and make sure it doesn't dry, in such case, add a bit more of water, gradually.

Recette

Chorizo piquant aux lentilles

Pour 4 personnes
4 chorizos piquants moyens
3 carottes moyennes
2 navets
1/2 oignon
lentilles vertes (l'équivalent de 2 verres d'eau)
feuille de laurier
thym
1/2 cube de bouillon de volaille
sel
poivre
huile d'olive

Lovely and perfect post for me today dear Lala. Here the weather is beautiful and sunny but very windy and cold. Normally we don't get a lot of wind. Your lentil dish would be perfect for the day and I especially love chorizo too. I made some lentil stew yesterday myself. It was very nice and am enjoying some today as well. I hope your cousin gets his very soon. Big hugs. xx
