Liberty escapism

This is my inspiration today....not that I planned to be reading all day languorously
reclined on my daybed....I wish...
I've been leafing through the gorgeous catalog of the Victoria and Albert Museum's
Cult of Beauty exhibition
and was totally absorbed by this painting,
Reading aloud (1884) by Albert Moore.
Besides the nonchalant reverie which seduces me, its title had me questioning
the very fact of reading aloud to other people. Do you ever read aloud to your friends ?
Then my other question was - much more trivial - could by any chance
the printed fabric come from Liberty ? (knowing the legendary store played an important
part to the aesthetic movement of this period).

You see, as I told you in my earlier post, I'm looking for some pretty fabrics
for my summer aprons and inevitably I started swooning on Liberty fabrics.
I was a total fan many years ago and it took me by surprise but, I'm still
strongly addicted to their delicate and refreshing prints.

Are you a Liberty fan too or do you think it's too rosy/sugary ?

What a lovely post. the painting are wonderful. I think they would be either Liberty Prints or William Morris, who was around about that time. Have you ever visited the Liberty shop in Regent Street London? I often did when I lived there but now I am in the country I don't get the chance too.

Regards, Jackie in Surrey.
Thank you for placing this painting in your blog... Just beautiful... Great inspiration!

My tissuskills are zero: but the atmosphere is enachanting in the pictures: calm, waiting for nothingor for all, maybe boring.

Beautiful painting, swimming in fabric. My wife is a quilter so we are always on the hunt for good fabric.

Sigh...I am not a Liberty girl...a little too flowery for me. I do love the fabric in the painting, the designs seem to be more William and Morris, more to my liking!

Love Liberty fabrics and not all of them are sugary. I could spend hours in their haberdashery department too ;-) xo
