Paris : a food story and bravo to Mama Shelter

In Paris, I could eat all the time or just sit at café terraces to take pics of the stylish personnel like this lovely waitress at Salon de thé Carette on Place des Vosges.

or this waiter at Le Petit Fer à Cheval, rue Vieille-du-Temple. I used to go all the time when I lived in the area. It was nice to have coffee there after all that time !

On our first day, we had tea and cakes at Ladurée, rue Bonaparte (sorry, no pics, in my haste to have cakes, I forgot my camera at the hotel), and went to have dinner at Le Tambour, a good old bistrot where waiters are sympa, efficient and the food is generous and excellent.
Actually, we had a reservation at the Georges (Beaubourg restaurant) and in the end, we changed our mind. The Georges is very nice in terms of design and the views over Paris are unique BUT after having been there twice, I can now say that I'm fed up with staff (gorgeous by the way, models-like) which only parades, looks down on you and forgets to serve ! So that night, we chose to be in a cool warm ambiance. The decor of Le Tambour is all about the metro and Parisian transport. It has a "good old days" feeling. We were seated on old wooden bus benches. Next to us, was another couple. After a while we engaged conversation. They said they lived in the district and sometimes have a very late dinner at Le Tambour very very early....at 3am ! I forgot to tell you that the restaurant is opened all day long until really late. It's also one of these rare places where you can still drink wine "à la ficelle" (literally translated : at the cord), meaning you order a bottle of wine and then you just pay what you drink. Funny, isn't it ? When our charming neighbors left, they had only drank half of a bottle "à la ficelle" but paid for the whole bottle and offered us the other half...Parisians can be nice sometimes !

Monchéri remained faithful to his Andalusian faux-macho look during our Parisian stay.
It can't be helped !

Durant notre séjour parisien, Monchéri reste fidèle à son look faux macho andalou. On se refait pas !

Another place, we really liked is Mama Shelter, the new place in the 20th arrondissement designed by Philippe Starck. Ok, it's a bit far but it's worth while. Mama Shelter is a big place which combines a restaurant, an outdoor terrace, a pizzeria and an island bar and it also has an hotel - maybe the cheapest business hotel in Paris. We got there without booking and the headwaitress had no more table for us, so she proposed, either we wait until 22h30 or we get served at the island bar or we sit at the long table at the pizzeria. We decided to have a cocktail at the island bar - I recommend you the Old Cuban - then, we tried the pizzeria and sat down on high stools at a very long table covered with a simple red and white checkered tablecloth. On our left, three young gentlemen and another elder man were talking about the latter's latest menswear collection. On our right, there was another couple and in front of us, a man was eating his pizza while writing on a notebook from time to time. We started to talk. He was a designer who has just exhibited at Maison & Objet and we soon started a very interesting conversation about....notebooks.
How can I describe you in a few words, the ambiance in Mama Shelter ? Simply, we had a very nice time there....Ok, it's a trendy place, but you have all kinds of people there : bobos, artists, work colleagues, families...I loved that mix. The staff is smiling...yes...smiling, and efficient and helpful. I can't say anything about the food Alain Senderens created for the restaurant since we had pizzas but we will definitely come back to try it. The music background is reasonably loud and the choice of music is nicely eclectic. Before ordering dessert, we even got up and danced on Yves Montand "c'est si bon"....perhaps it was because of the cocktails but I guess this says how good we felt in that place !
And also, the coolest thing is when I asked one of the barmen if I could take pics, he looked a bit annoyed as he had to ask the headwaiter who said : "Ah oui, c'est pour un blog en Andalousie....Nous ici, on adore les Andalous ! Alors oui, feu vert !" (really ? it's for a blog in Andalusia ? here we love Andalusian people !! Go ahead !)

Alors oui, feu vert !"

The ceiling is covered with inscriptions and ads . This one is quite funny : Achète vins même vieux et imbuvables. Buy wines even old and undrinkable.

To end this food post on a sweet note, I invite you to virtually enjoy the pastries of the most Parisian of Japanese pastry makers, the extraordinaire Sadaharu Aoki. I took these pics at Lafayette Gourmet where we tasted his new pastry, a light strawberry delight...truly delightful.

The pastries look devine! Thanks for another great blog post with fab photos!
Lala, so much information for my next trip to Paris! I recognized the first photo's location immediately, but loved seeing Mama Shelter pics. I had read about it but a picture is the best -- I saw a Philippe Starck hotel in Buenos Aires that was like nothing I have ever seen before but they were very strict about "no photos."

I went "beyond" on my Paris blog today to Andalusia, just for the day and thinking about you.

Oh, now I'm so hungry after reading your post!

It interests me that Paris is considered so beautiful and romantic -- but I also keep reading about how the service (waiters/waitresses, shop clerks) can be so unpleasant or snooty, even to chic, charming people like you, Lala!

I am worried about how I will handle unpleasant, cold service when I do finally make my trip to Paris. I'm a very polite, reserved Midwestern American, accustomed to attentive waitstaff and chatty shopkeepers. But at least I'll know I'm not alone -- people of all sorts experience the Parisian chill, it seems.

Thank you for your café tour of Paris. I could smell the coffee and taste the atmosphere. It also brought memories of Seville to mind, with the intimate cosy corners that you have captured for us.

It sounds like you had such a wonderful time. It makes such a difference when you can communicate in a foreign country. I would have loved to have been as fluent as you, but I did okay. I studied for months before going...and then, of course, all that high school French! Thanks for sharing your photos, Lala.
