The sweet life in Andalusia

This is what I like most about Andalusia...
the slow life,
the simplicity of a garland of red peppers drying on a balcony
the white villages which still shine even in foggy weather
the promise of a sunny day after the rain
and the sweetness of its wine

C'est tout ce que j'aime de l'Andalousie....

la vie lente,

la simplicité d'une guirlande de poivrons rouges qui sèche au balcon

les villages blancs qui ont un éclat même dans le brouillard

la promesse d'un jour ensoleillé après la pluie

et la douceur de son vin

The cozy refuge of a painter in the Alpujarras mountains

The day after Christmas, a friend took us to the cozy and secret refuge of a painter
in the Alpujarras mountains, in the south of Granada.
The inviting fire and the warm ambiance made us want to stay nearly for ever
especially as it was so cold and foggy outside.

Le lendemain de Noël, un ami nous a fait découvrir le refuge secret et douillet d'un artiste peintre
dans les montagnes des Alpujarras au sud de Grenade.
Il faisait tellement bon avec le feu dans la cheminée et une douce ambiance, que l'on n'avait plus envie de sortir
dans le froid et le brouillard au dehors.

It was sunny when we left the Lecrin valley and suddenly
upon reaching the mountains, we found ourselves surrounded in a deep fog
Cold but so magical

Il faisait soleil quand nous avons quitté la vallée de Lecrin et tout d'un coup
en arrivant dans les montagnes, un brouillard profond nous a enveloppés
Froid mais si magique

With music and chocolate : last festive preparations

While it's pouring outside, it's wonderful to be at home
and spend time on last Christmas preparations.
Yesterday evening I made a collage as a funny surprise for Monchéri
which says : You are the caviar on my toast
It's how I feel about him, well not all the time, but most of times
and I thought Christmas was the best time ever to let him know


Christmas in Andalusia is a quiet and happy time.
It is not customary yet for people to adorn their door with wreaths.
The traditional Andalusian Christmas eve dinner is a very simple meal
consisting mainly of a chestnut and sweet potato soup
I must say in spite of my liking of sophisticated food,
I quite like this simplicity at this time of year
although I love decorating the house,
placing chocolate sweets and ivy wreaths here and there
sprinkling the joy of Christmas

Il pleut des cordes et j'adore rester à la maison
à m'affairer sur les derniers préparatifs de Noël.
Hier soir j'ai fait la surprise d'un collage à Monchéri
"You are the caviar on my toast"
Parce que c'est ce qu'il m'inspire, pas toujours évidemment mais la plupart du temps
et j'ai pensé que Noël était un bon moment pour le lui dire

Noël en Andalousie, c'est calme et joyeux en même temps.
Les gens ici n'ont pas encore pour habitude de décorer leur porte avec une couronne.
Le menu traditionnel andalou du réveillon de Noël est très simple, frugal même.
Une soupe à base marrons et d'une espèce de patate douce
que l'on appelle boniato
Je dois avouer que malgré mon goût pour des plats plus sophistiqués,
j'aime assez cette simplicité à ce moment précis de l'année.
Bien sûr, j'adore décorer la maison.
Je pose des chocolats ici et là et des couronnes de lierre.
J'aime la magie et la joie de Noël.

The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plains

....which of course is not true....

while northern European countries are covered in snow,
our hilly Lecrin valley in the south of Granada shines with rain.
I went to a French girls lunch yesterday at my friend Josiane
and clouds were hanging low over the charming village of Restabal

....ce qui bien sûr n'est pas vrai du tout...

alors que la neige sévit dans toute l'Europe du nord,

notre vallée de Lecrin au sud de Grenade brille sous la pluie.
J'avais un déjeuner de filles hier chez mon amie Josiane
et les nuages étaient très bas au-dessus du beau village de Restabal

I love the narrow winding road which leads to the village
and this is my favorite curve just before the little bridge

J'aime beaucoup la petite route sinueuse qui mène au village
surtout le virage juste avant le petit pont

the road is lined with orange groves

la route est bordée d'orangers et de vergers
and there's always a house which seems abandoned or maybe just neglected
which catches my eye

et il y a toujours une maison qui semble abandonnée
ou peut-être seulement un peu négligée qui attire mon regard

Josiane had been busy making pomanders too...
well she's got quite a good stock of oranges in her patio and garden !

Josiane aussi a fait pas mal d'oranges piquées de clous de girofle....
elle a de quoi faire avec toutes ces oranges dans le patio et le jardin !

I always hesitate to use red at home but I really like the red paint she used in her pantry.
It does give warmth and light to the room.

J'hésite toujours à peindre en rouge chez moi mais j'aime vraiment la teinte
qu'elle a utilisée dans le garde-manger.
Ça donne un effet chaleureux et lumineux.

After a delicious curry, the surprise was a yummy vacherin Mont d'Or
(a 5 star French cheese) and when I say yummy,
I mean oh la la !

Après un curry délicieux, la surprise, c'était un vacherin Mont d'Or
coulant à souhait...bref, le top du top !

ps :
for my lovely Spanish Monchéri,
saying the cue above from My Fair Lady is a bit of a torture
in Spanish, its equivalent is
La lluvia en Sevilla es una maravilla
I can tell you, it took me quite a while to pronounce the double l correctly !

ps :

mon adorable chéri espagnol a beaucoup de mal

à prononcer la célèbre phrase de My Fair Lady.

En espagnol, l'équivalent c'est

La lluvia en Sevilla es una maravilla.

Et moi, j'ai mis beaucoup de temps à prononcer le double l correctement !

The bûche de Noël

When I was a kid my mother would make lots of fuss about the bûche de Noël

the inevitable, chocolate bûche which was part of our 13 desserts for Christmas

as was the tradition in Provence

Over the years, we had bûche with cherries, with chestnuts, iced bûche,

Homemade of course and we shared a wonderful happy time in the kitchen
After all what could make three little girls happier than
melting chocolate and decorating the bûche with tiny trees and gilded ornaments ?

I received the Côté Maison online magazine in the mail today
and saw these beautiful and creative bûches
I drooled over them
and then remembered with tenderness and emotion
our somewhat imperfect bûche
and the laughters and fun we had with my sisters and my mother

In the end, this is what Christmas is about, shouldn't it
even if the bûche is not that perfect ?

Quand j'étais petite, ma mère prenait la bûche de Noël très au sérieux...
l'inévitable bûche au chocolat faisait partie de nos treize desserts de Noël
comme le veut la tradition provençale

Au fil des années, il y a eu la bûche aux cerises, à la purée de marron, bûche glacée...
Faite maison, bien sûr avec séances de fous rires dans la cuisine
Franchement qu'est-ce qui peut faire plus plaisir à trois petites gourmandes que
de faire fondre du chocolat et de décorer la bûche avec
des sapins minuscules et des petites boules dorées ?

J'ai reçu le magazine Côté Maison en ligne dans mon courrier aujourd'hui
et j'ai repéré ces magnifiques bûches très créatives
qui m'ont fait rêver et puis je me suis souvenue avec tendresse et émotion
de la bûche que l'on faisait à la maison.
Pas aussi parfaite, bien sûr mais c'était un merveilleux moment que l'on partageait
mes soeurs, ma mère et moi

Et à Noël c'est quand même ça, l'important non ?
Passer de beaux moments ensemble même si la bûche n'est pas aussi parfaite ?

Love love pomanders

Oh yes, I love making pomanders by this time of the year
but may be the first orange I chose this morning was too hard
as I quickly had a sore thumb !

Don't think I will have a dozen made today
it does smell nice though

Supposedly if you don't want your orange to rot too soon
you must fill every millimeter with cloves

but I felt a bit lazy
Are you making some too ?



Alors, oui j'adore préparer des pommes d'ambre à cette époque de l'année
mais la première orange que j'ai choisie était sûrement trop dure
et j'ai le pouce tout endolori !

Je ne pense pas que j'en ferai une douzaine aujourd'hui
mais qu'est-ce que ça sent bon

On dit que pour éviter que l'orange pourrisse trop vite
il faut la piquer entièrement de clous de girofle, au millimètre près
mais j'étais trop paresseuse
En préparez-vous aussi ?

Little ivy wreaths

The Andalusian weather has been quite clement and even sunny lately
No chance of a romantic white Christmas....How I wish though !

I slowly start decorating the house
with little ivy wreaths
which I adorn with bits found in my trinket boxes



Le temps andalou s'est mis au beau ces derniers jours
pas de Noël blanc en vue ...dommage !

et je commence tout doucement à décorer la maison
avec de petites couronnes en lierre
ornées de perles et de pampilles

Zigzag, Flashbacks of a Painter by Gym Halama

....Hugo rang from England:
"Do you want a job in Monte Carlo?"
"Of course I do." my imagination already running away with me.

This is an excerpt from my friend Gym's book Zigzag, Flashbacks of a Painter.
She recently produced a 50 illustrated story book about episodes of her exciting life.

She takes the reader to a vibrant London in the 60s,
then on to exotic destinations like Russia where she worked at the Bolshoï as a set decorator or Tibet and Venice.

There's a very happy zest for life in those snapshots of an artist
and I so enjoyed every minute of it.

"It's a great read, atmospheric and witty" says actor and director Peter Capaldi
and I couldn't agree more.

C'est un extrait du livre que mon amie Gym, peintre et décoratrice vient juste de publier, Zigzag, Flashbacks of a Painter.

En 50 récits illustrés, elle nous emmène dans le Londres trépidant des années 60,
puis vers des destinations exotiques comme la Russie où elle travaille comme décoratrice au Bolshoï
ou encore au Tibet ou à Venise.

Ce sont des tranches de vie pleines d'humour et de joie de vivre que j'ai adoré savourer.

"Un très bon livre, plein d'atmosphère et d'esprit"

et c'est tout à fait ça.

The little Paperie Show

My little Paperie show and Gym's book signing went very well last sunday.
It was a happy event as it usually is at the Sandpit Club.

It started at 5pm and ended with a party at 2am.
On arrival, guests were offered mulled wine and beautiful exotic food.

And the only thing I can lament is that I never really had time to take pictures.
Before setting up my table, I was busy with the girl's team, Gym, Ellie and little Nina.
We had 2 hours to finish decorating the superb food Ellie had prepared.
A little bit after 5, our first visitor came and I was very happy to welcome a reader of the blog, Daizie,
whom I was meeting for the first time. So exciting !

Ma petite présentation de papeterie combinée à la signature du livre de Gym, dimanche dernier a été un petit succès.
C'était une soirée très agréable comme toujours au Sandpit Club.

Les invités étaient accueillis avec un verre de vin chaud et des canapés exotiques.
Nous avons commencé à 17h et la soirée s'est terminée à 2h du mat.

La seule chose que je regrette est de n'avoir jamais eu le temps de prendre des photos.
Avant de préparer ma table, je me suis affairée avec l'équipe des filles, Gym, Ellie et la petite Nina.
Il nous restait 2 heures chrono pour finir de décorer le superbe buffet préparé par Ellie.
Un peu après 17h, notre première invitée est arrivée et j'étais ravie de rencontrer Daizie,
une lectrice du blog. Très chouette !

I placed a panel with clippings of my work in the French press and the Spanish Holà (for one of my handbags).
And most of my buyers asked me why on earth I stopped designing handbags.
Which actually made me ponder why not carrying on both things : paperie and handbags.
I'll let you know !

J'avais placé un panneau avec des photos de mes créations dans la presse française et le Holà espagnol (pour un de mes sacs).
Et la plupart de mes acheteurs m'ont demandé pourquoi j'avais arrêté de créer des sacs.
Du coup, moi aussi je me dis que c'est un peu idiot et que je ferais mieux de continuer et la papeterie et les sacs.
Je vous tiendrai au courant !

which I so enjoyed reading these past few days.
