All Saints Day and a chocolate marble cake

The first flat I rented when I lived in Paris was in the 11th arrondissement, near
the Père Lachaise cemetery.  I loved strolling there during week days, away from the
tourists. Not that I was inclined toward morbid thoughts but you may know that the
Père Lachaise is no ordinary graveyard with all the celebrities which are there to rest :
Chopin, Edith Piaf, Balzac, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and so many more. Of course,
the place commands respect and a quiet introspection but it's also incredibly, if I may
say, full of life. Since then, I stopped feeling uneasy and melancholic in a graveyard and
last saturday, I accompanied Monchéri to the little cemetery out of the village, where
both his parents are buried.

He wanted to lay red roses and tubereuses, his mother's favorite flowers on their grave.
On All Saints Day, here in Andalusia lots of families gather at the graveyeard to clean the grave of
dead parents and bring some flowers. Last saturday, all those bright colours made the place quite
cheerful.

We had planned to go back to the laguna in the afternoon to enjoy even more quietness and
solitude and also our very last days of warm weather. I made a chocolate marble cake in the
morning, which I slipped in our basket with two plates, a knife and a thermos.
There is such a magical light in that place, it makes you want to stay until the sun sets.

Just when we left Monchéri picked up some quinces....again...we now have
an accumulation of those in the kitchen and each morning, I wonder
when I'll start doing something with them. As a child I loved quince paste,
but strangely enough, I'm not quite in the mood to set to the task.

An impromptu yet stylish picnic is what I love most

A chocolate marble cake which I made in 20 mn and baked in the oven
for 40 mn.

The recipe is from the Larousse des desserts (the Spanish
edition) by Pierre Hermé....the book which brightened my life when I was
in a dark period before meeting Monchéri....but this is another story....
let's get on with the recipe...

Recipe

Ingredients
3 eggs
175g of butter
200g of sugar
175g of flour
1/2  packet of baking powder
50g of cocoa powder (unsweetened)
1 vanilla bean

Break the eggs and separate the yolks from the whites. Melt the butter. Whisk the eggs until they form stiff peaks. Sieve the flour with the baking powder.
Using an electrical mixer, beat the melted butter and the sugar and then add the yolks. Mix well. Gradually add the flour and in the end the egg whites. Blend delicately. Scrape the vanilla bean with a knife and add the seeds in the dough.
Preheat the oven at 200ºC.
Divide the dough in 2 equal parts and add the cocoa powder in one of them.
Butter a mold or line it with baking paper.
Pour a first layer of dough with cocoa, then a layer of dough without cocoa and alternate until the mold is filled.
Bake for 30-40 mn.

Enfourner pendant 30-40mn.

Anything which says chocolate is bound to draw me in. This looks like an easy cake to make. I will have to try it.
Easy like child's play ! :-)
The artistic photos give us a sense of the delight and romance of the day and your cake is certainly tasty looking. I love that heart-shaped cake pan, and also your dress! Wishing both of you many more such moments to enjoy together.

The cemetery looks very festive with the glowing colors of the flowers, a good tradition. You are so graceful in your dress and the romantic picnic looks like fun.

Beautiful photos.

I've always enjoyed walks and meditations through cemeteries. It's fun to wonder about the lives of the people who lie buried there. It's also a nice quiet place to think.

I think the cemetery near your old neighborhood in Paris would be full of interest with all the celebrities who are there. Quite a different experience to other cemeteries I've visited.
